I don’t care about reasons why this or that went down, if someone causes trouble – they’re out. After all, he is a customer and even though I have the power and authority to kick him out if I want to, I would rather only do so if he does something to justify it. So when a buddy gets in my face about throwing out their brother, friend, Uncle ….whatever, unjustly, I just keep my cool and patience.

And who would you rather babysit when they are drinking? A roomful of childish Alpha Males or a club full of mature people just wanting to have a good safe time? Remember this: it is our job to protect the interests of the bar! Throwing out innocent people instead of the trouble makers just makes your establishment a haven for bullies and good customers will be less likely to return. And everyone of these guys thinks that we are dumb. Their “just wanting to talk” translates in Drunkese to “I want to harass the other guy into starting a fight so I look innocent and he gets thrown out”. In my experience, guys in bars who have problems with their ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend or guys (or girls) who are having a war of words and eyes with someone else on the dance floor rarely “just want to talk”. He “just wants to talk and find out what the other guys problem is”. Of course, he is never “doing anything wrong” as they all say. Now whomever approaches the other first, is 9 times out of 10 the one looking for a fight and when they do, we quickly escort him out. I’ll have one bouncer follow this individual to listen and observe. You see, the innocent party usually just wants to be left alone, so he may excuse himself to the patio. And there is something magical about alcohol that will reveal who is really causing the problem quick. I like to separate the kids and find out who the aggressor is. Regardless of the situation, it is how you handle it that will build your reputation as a good cooler.

Every night I get an earful about how “this guy and girl just broke up and now she’s here with another guy to make her ex jealous” or “that guy said something to my boyfriend and now they’re giving each other the ‘fuck you eyes'”. Everybody wins.Īnother situation that I find will happen if you have the customer’s respect is they will let you know if trouble is brewing down at the old dancing hole. Plus, your bar can still sell drinks to your informant and their entourage minus their H2O drinking friend. Now if on the other hand you walk up calmly and suggest that the friend start drinking water to pace themselves, then (if they heed your advice) you have the whole group’s respect because they don’t all have to go home early because of one asshole or wait in line at another bar.

If you quickly rush to kick them out, the informer feels betrayed and may not offer you insider reports again. What kind of intelligence do I mean? Well, if the customers respect you, they will tell you if one of their friends are drinking too much. And by using this information wisely, you earn their respect and more patrons will feel safe in sharing inside information with you. Personally, I find by being open and friendly, a lot of people will come to me with intelligence that helps us prevent situations from even happening in and around the bar. They don’t want to talk to anyone for fear of looking weak or making friends with someone they will need to kick out later. Most bouncers just want to be a strong and silent looking sentinel. Far better is it to keep your eyes and ears open and eject the real shit disturbers while allowing the truly innocent to enjoy their night and to go on and spread the legend that will become You! 😉 So they quickly usher the “trouble maker” out while the true guilty party grins and moves on. If a patron is upset, some bouncers tend to assume that they are the cause the problem because of their demeanor. You go a long way to earning that respect by always being fair and just and not letting your ego dig you an early grave.įar too many bouncers today have a knee-jerk reaction to events that go down in the bar.

You can’t just put on your SECURITY shirt and expect everyone to do your bidding. And if you can’t control the people in the bar, then the lunatics are running the asylum – with your permission. If you cannot control yourself, then you are voluntarily giving the power position to the one who pulls your strings – in this case, some inebriated jackass playing with you. Sadly, I know more bouncers who take the bait then those who can control themselves. The guys I get a kick out of the most, are the ones who think they can goad you into throwing the first punch. You know, a typical Jersey Shores good time. Sometimes we get spat at, bit, kicked, punched, slapped, hair pulled and verbally abused as well. The life of a bouncer isn’t all just hot chicks and looking good.
